Although the lyrics may touch on the sentimentalism and romantic whimsy that's characterized much of Coldplay's music during the past ('Call it magic/ think of it as true/ I refer to it as magic/ when I'm with you'), the arrangement is wonderfully understated. Like most of their best songs, the lilting appeal of 'Magic' packs an effective emotional punch. And even though the Radiohead influence is definitely an unambiguous point of reference, it's nevertheless encouraging to find out the group carry on and evolve with a part of their careers if it could be simple to retreat.
